Phone "consult"

So, just as I promised myself, I drug myself to the phone yesterday to schedule a consult with my RE. A very delayed WTF appointment, if you will. Here is how the conversation with the nurse went:

Me: I'd like to schedule a time when the doc can call me to go over last cycle and any recommendations/thoughts he has for future treatment. Work is really busy lately, so I don't have time to drive all the way to your office.
Nurse: Well, can you come in at 11:45am today?
Me: No, I really don't have the time to drive over this week. Are there any appointments open where he could just call me during the appointment time?
Nurse: Well there is an 8:20am open on Thursday?
Me: Okay, if he could call me then, that would be great. I will block it out on my calendar.
Nurse: Well, I can't reserve that time for you because we save the appointment times for patients who come in. The doc's time is very valuable, after all. I have a 1:30pm on Thursday, would that work?
Me: No, seriously, I don't have time to drive over there. (Thinking, um, I am audibly talking, no?) So you can't just put my name in the 8:20 slot and have him call me at that time?
Nurse: No, all I can do is let him know you want to talk with him, and that he should try to call you whenever he has a minute. Mmm-kay?

Okay. I will let your blood stop boiling.

THE DOC'S TIME IS VALUABLE?!?!?!??!! Well ex-CUSE me! I had no idea. We didn't just pay you $9k or anything, and have nothing to show for it. (And, okay fine, I realize that they can bill for patients who come IN, but not for phone calls, but come on. It's not like I haven't been writing you checks for the last year.) I didn't just tell you FIVE TIMES that my work is so busy I don't have time for the 3-hour (including appt) round trip to your office and back home. Really, you say his time is valuable?????

And, as you may expect, when I got home from volunteering yesterday afternoon, he had left me a voicemail FOUR minutes prior. Great, just great. I was steamed. I called the nurse back and told her that if I can't know when he is going to call, he needs to call my cellphone. She seemed to get the idea that I wasn't too happy with her not letting me schedule a time with him.

He called my cell phone like 10 minutes later. He was "so glad to hear my voice and see how I'm doing". Hmph. The lack of phone call initiation on their part makes me doubt this. But, as for the gist of what his reflections are, basically he is disappointed with the low fertilization rate (1 of 3 mature, basically), and it might indicate less than awesome eggs, but since I am still young, if we wanted to do another cycle (read: IVF), he wouldn't recommend against it. I told him we are not interested in doing anothere IVF round, but that we might be inclined to try clomid and what about 100mg instead of 50mg? He said he'd be fine with that, and if I wanted a prescription to just call them when a new cycle starts.

Most communication from their office being disappointingly-equal, I wish I had his direct-dial. This is not the first time I've become disillusioned with the body/voice language of the nurse. Maybe I'll call the receptionist and go through her instead if/when I need the prescription.

Or, maybe if we do want to try (even with clomid), we should transfer RE practices. They can prescribe clomid just as easily as my current place. Who knows. Will they do a phone consult? I really am through with RE appointments for now...

Glad the RE is still positive and that he's going to support the path you want to take.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe it was so difficult to get in touch with the RE! OK, who am I kidding? Yes I can believe that...

My blood is boiling for you. SERIOUSLY?!

I like the Clomid idea. Maybe you do another IVF, but in the meantime, taking something and then trying on your own sounds blissfully unstressful.

Btw, I had a nasty run-in over the phone with a nurse yesterday. I swear she thought I was total jerk. Meanwhile, sheesh, we're all scared and desperate for a baby...and doing the best we can. xo

SO frustrating! I am sorry - and in favor of switching RE's if/ when you want to pursue a clomid cycle.

Oh that's just awful! Have you told the RE that his nurse is a wench? Definitely go through the front desk.... or just call your regular OBGYN, they can call in a prescription for Clomid just as easily and aren't nearly as difficult to get a hold of as an RE. Good luck in deciding which course to take. I'm sure the Lord will guide you.

OMG how FRUSTRATING!!! Let me tell you about my clinic and maybe it will make you (or me, haha) feel a little better. Once they took blood from me when they weren't supposed to. Once they called my voicemail and left a message for Stephanie about her appointment. Who is Stephanie??? I have no idea. And here is my favorite...2 days after my transfer they called to let me know that they froze 7 embryos. Yep...I only had 7 BEFORE the transfer so I argued with them. Took them 2 days to figure it out. And I was right....
As if this stuff isn't stressful enough!!! I feel for ya!

I'm sorry, but this exchange makes me smile. "Appointment" to the nurse means coming in. Nothing else will come across. It's like an Abott & Costello skit.

Honestly? I would contact another clinic. I think it's a little ridiculous that you had to fight to talk to the doctor on the phone. If you aren't comfortable or you feel like you aren't getting the attention you deserve, you owe it to yourself to at least talk to another doctor/clinic.

Good luck making the decisions about your doctor and treatment. Follow your heart. I've found that my heart is the only thing that leads me in the right direction.

That is just so frustrating, ugh!! I'm sorry about the bitchy nurse, but glad you finally got to talk to the RE. And since you're taking a little break, maybe it would be a good time to research new RE clinics? So sorry for the headaches, like can't anything ever just be easy sometimes, sheesh!

Oh wow..I am so sorry! This process is hard enough without the hassel of rude doctor's offices! I can't imagine how frustrated and upset you are/were! Maybe switching practices might be good and you never know, they might see something your other RE didn't? I will be praying for you!

Oh my gosh, I'd want to smack that nurse. Geez, can't you even work with your patients a little bit?

Gah that whole thing sounds annoying and frustrating. I'm glad he finally caught you though. I hope that the clomid does the trick.

Man, why do they make it so difficult? I'm glad that you finally got to talk to the doc, but really, 3 hours of driving and she can't block out a time for him to call you? Doesn't our time mean ANYTHING to them?

Glad the RE will hand over the clomid with no questions though.

Oh my goodness! How rude. I don't even understand how she could keep on trying to get you to come in to the office. Hellooo! Glad you were finally able to talk to him.

Well I'm glad you at least found out something. They can, most certainly do a phone consult (we did that before our fet so we wouldn't have to drive 3 hours). Honestly, if you like your doctor, I think you should tell him about your dissatisfaction with the nurse.

What the F! I have been dissapointed by many docs, but that one is ridiculous!!

Ugh. Sorry for the frustration. Sometimes these RE clinics are just so frustrating! I know mine was!

I'm glad the doctor reached you though, and I hope you guys can think of a great plan going forward. Thinking of you.

Ohh, dealing with medical staff like that drives me crazy. So sorry. If there is another good RE in the area, I'd switch! Hope you're doing well other than that!

Jerk RE. Jerk nurse. Do something for me: if you do switch practices (which I heartily endorse), write a letter to your old practice (after he sends your records) and let him know what parts of his practice were so disappointing.

UGH. So sorry it was so frustrating!!! I am not the kind of person who likes any kind of confrontation, but telling my doc about his insensitive nurse was one of the best things I ever did. I think they really don't know what goes on outside of our interactions with them unless we tell them! It's worth a shot. If not, you might consider making a switch if you keep getting attitude from her.
Sorry! I know how frustrating that is!

Yeech. What an experience. I liked how you were trying to press the nurse but she still just didn't get it. At least the doc called you back immediately. I wish you could have better access to their "VALUABLE" time or at least email them and get a better response.

Wow, that is ridiculous.

You're right, clomid would be really easy to do with another clinic. You could also do it with just an OB/GYN if they're on board.
