Food on Friday (sad for a friend)

Friday, March 25, 2011

A friend of mine at church was 16w pregnant and had suddenly felt strange, so she mentioned it to her midwife at her appointment earlier this week. Her baby had no heartbeat, and an ultrasound revealed that the baby had stopped growing at 14w. She had a d&c yesterday, and the local cemetery has an infant section, and the baby will be buried a week from today.

My heart aches for her- I can't describe it any other way.

Some other ladies and I are collaborating to cover meals for a while for our friend and her family. The main dish I am planning on bringing for their Sunday dinner is Shepherd's Pie: a wonderful suggestion from my aunt!! I will also bring a salad.

What other sides would you suggest? What dessert do you think would go well?

(I am sorry if this is scary for some readers- it scares the heck out of me, too, but I don't think it is right to focus on my fear at a time when it's my friend's crisis, not mine...)

Mashed/creamed potatoes go well with Shepard's Pie. Make sure yall send some chocolate!

This scares me too. I recently stuck my foot in my mouth thinking that it was ok to ask about someone's pregnancy after the first trimester... she miscarried at 12.5 weeks and I didn't know. I am 21 weeks and this all scares the mess outta me!

Thank you for reminding me that the focus is not on my fear but on their loss. I try to keep it fresh in my mind that this pregnancy is from God and He is in control.

Praying for your friend and her family.

Oh no, how sad. You're poor friend. :(

Food sounds like a wonderful idea.

Oh Gosh, how terrible. Lots of prayers being offered up for them.

Since you're going to comfort food route, try mac & cheese? Or maybe Meatloaf? For dessert a batch of cookies?

Good idea!

You are such a wonderful friend. This is very scary for all of us that are newly pregnant but I can't even imagine what your friend is going through.

My heart hurts for her. I know after my last m/c and d&c, I kept taking the pain meds until they were gone, even though I wasn't in pain, I just couldn't face being conscious all day. You are such a good friend to take care of her in this way, and Shepherd's pie is one of my favorites!!! Good choice! I would just do a basic salad and maybe some bread sticks or french bread. Then for dessert, whatever you think your specialty is. Mine is cinnamon rolls, everyone asks for them so that's usually what I make. Doesn't have to go together because she probably can't eat much while on pain meds anyway, so she will eat it at intervals. Just something yummy. *hugs* to you and her.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's loss. She is so lucky to have such a great support system.

That is so sad. Just breaks my heart.

I think the single serve stuff like cookies is best so they can freeze what they may not want. Or instead of dessert you could do breakfast muffins so they have morning food. Either way, I know they will appreciate all you are doing for them.

Oh no; that's terrible. I'm so sorry for them. Salads are always good or some sort of veggie casserole that they could heat up later.
